Northwest Montana is hard on roofs. Deep snow loads, freeze-thaw cycles that run all winter, ice at the eaves, and a UV load at elevation that ages material faster than most people expect. Metal handles all four better than anything else we install, but only if it's the right system, detailed correctly.
This is the decision that matters most, and the two systems are not close in snow country.
Standing seam hides its fasteners under the seam. Panels clip to the deck and stay free to expand and contract as temperatures swing, which they do hard here. Nothing penetrates the weather surface, so there's nothing to work loose.
Exposed fastener panel screws straight through the metal face, with a rubber washer at every screw doing the waterproofing. It costs meaningfully less and it's a legitimate choice for a shop, barn, or outbuilding. On a house, those washers are the weak point: they compress, harden, and eventually need re-torquing or replacing, and there are hundreds of them.
A metal roof sheds snow instead of holding it, which is what you want structurally and a genuine hazard if nobody thought about where it lands. A full winter's load coming off a pitch at once will flatten shrubs, dent a vehicle, tear off a gutter, or catch someone walking out the back door.

Metal gives ice less to grab and drains faster once things thaw. It does not fix an ice dam problem on its own. Dams form because heat escapes into the attic, melts the snowpack from underneath, and that meltwater refreezes at the cold eave. That's a ventilation and insulation issue, and swapping the roof surface doesn't change it.
Our inspection looks at intake and exhaust ventilation and the insulation at the eaves alongside the roof itself. If that's what's driving your problem, we'll tell you, even when it means a smaller job for us.
Metal is wrong for some roofs. Low-slope sections below the panel manufacturer's minimum pitch need a different assembly. Complex rooflines with many valleys, dormers, and penetrations drive metal labour up sharply, and a quality architectural shingle can be the better value. And if you're selling in two years, you likely won't recover the premium.
We'd rather say that up front than sell you the wrong roof.
