Gutters that handle a Montana thaw

A gutter that works in Seattle can fail here. Our water does not arrive as steady rain, it arrives all at once when the snowpack lets go, and it arrives with ice in it.

Sized for snow melt, not rainfall

Most gutters are specified for steady rain. In the Flathead Valley the real test is a warm afternoon in March, when a whole roof of snowpack turns to water in a few hours and runs off all at once.

Undersized gutters overshoot in that moment. The water lands at your foundation instead of away from it, and you never see the gutter fail because it happens while you are at work.

Seamless, and why it matters here

We roll seamless gutter on site to the exact length of your run. A sectional gutter from a big box store has a joint every ten feet, and every joint is a seam that expands, contracts, and eventually leaks.

Freeze-thaw punishes joints harder than almost anything else. A hundred cycles a winter works a sealed seam loose. Fewer seams is not a luxury upgrade up here, it is the difference between a gutter that lasts and one that drips down your siding.

Five inch or six inch

Five inch is the default almost everywhere. Six inch moves substantially more water and pairs with larger downspouts.

We size it to your roof area, your pitch, and how much snow that elevation holds. A steep roof with a big footprint sheds faster than a shallow one, and the gutter has to keep up with the worst hour of the year rather than the average one.

Hangers are the part nobody asks about

Wet snow sliding off a roof into a gutter is a heavy, sudden load. Standard hangers spaced the usual distance apart will pull loose, and once one goes the rest follow.

This matters most under metal. A standing seam roof sheds its entire snow load in one go, so gutters underneath need closer hanger spacing and heavier brackets, or snow retention above them so the load never arrives all at once.

The honest answer on gutter guards

Guards help. They do not make a gutter maintenance free, and anyone who tells you otherwise has not cleaned one in pine country.

Pine needles are the problem. They are thin enough to pass through or sit on top of most mesh, and they mat down into a felt that sheds water straight over the edge. Under heavy conifer cover, guards buy you a longer interval between cleanings rather than freedom from them.

Ice dams and heat cable

Heat cable in a gutter treats a symptom. Ice dams form because warm air escapes into the attic, melts snow from underneath, and that water refreezes at the cold eave. The gutter is where you notice it, not where it starts.

Cable can be the right call on a stubborn north elevation or a problem valley. But if we can fix the ventilation instead, that is the better repair and usually the cheaper one over time. Our inspection looks at both.

Where the water actually goes

A gutter is only half the system. Downspouts have to discharge far enough from the house that the water does not track back along the foundation, and in our winters they have to do it without the outlet freezing solid.

Downspout placement, extension length, and where the ground slopes are part of the quote, not an afterthought.

Do it with the roof

If your roof is due, do the gutters at the same time. Same crew, same ladders, one mobilisation, and the drip edge and gutter get detailed together instead of one trade working around the other.

Ask at the inspection even if you only called about one of them.
